“The truth will set you free.” John 8:31 (NIV)
It was illuminating for me to recognise how I’d often use my words to try to make everything ok, and so avoid conflict and upsetting others.
The driver was always fear. The fear of being judged. The fear of being abandoned.
But in not sharing the truth of my experience and how others were impacting me I was not only disempowering myself, but also not serving them in offering my sincere reflection.
Through the practice of circling, what a revelation it was to discover a way of speaking directly what’s true in each moment that is not only empowering for the speaker, but can also help foster deeper connection rather than alienation.
Being able to speak what’s true does indeed set you free, and transforms life from a fear-based attempt to control situations and others into an exciting, free-flowing adventure.
